Picture this: It's 3 AM, and you're curled up with your phone, feeling more connected to someone across the world than to the people down the street. Or maybe you've just had the most meaningful conversation of your week... through emoji reactions in a group chat.
If you're nodding along, welcome home. Let's talk about how the connection works in our digital age, especially for those of us whose brains are beautifully different.

The Real Talk About Online Connection
You know that moment when someone says, "But it's not a real connection if it's online"? Well, grab your favourite comfort drink, because we're about to challenge that myth with both heart and science.
Last week, I was sitting in my garden with Luna (my four-legged assistant), feeling overwhelmed by the world. I posted a simple "💭" in one of my online communities. Within minutes, people who truly understood were there, holding space without me having to explain the unexplainable. That's real connection, regardless of the medium. Its having the space and understanding that you can present and take up space exactly how is needed in this world!
Let's explore the Science Behind Digital Connection (In Human Words!)
Here's what researchers have discovered (and what many of us have felt):
- Our brains respond to meaningful online interactions similarly to in-person ones
- For many neurodivergent folks, digital spaces allow us to:
* Process at our own pace
* Control our sensory input
* Express ourselves more authentically
* Find our people without geographical limits
Think of it like having subtitles for social interaction - sometimes, it just makes everything clearer!
So, how do you go about finding Your Digital Cosy Corner?
These are a few of my favourite ways to measure my social media intake! Making social media a choice instead of letting it be constant in my life!
1. The Energy-Aware Approach
Instead of "You should be on these platforms," try asking:
- When do I feel energised online?
- Which spaces feel like a warm hug?
- Where can I be authentically me?
Create your "Digital Comfort Map":
□ Safe Spaces (where you can be fully you)
□ Learning Spaces (where you grow)
□ Rest Spaces (where you recharge)
□ Connection Spaces (where you find your people)
2. The Sensory-Friendly Social Media Guide
Your Phone Settings Wellness Check:
- Are your notifications serving you?
- Have you set up dark mode for evening browsing?
- Do you have quiet hours configured?
Creating Your Digital Sanctuary:
- Curate your feed like you'd decorate your home
- Follow accounts that make you feel seen
- Mute what depletes you (it's not unfriendly, it's necessary!)
3. Building Authentic Online Connections
The Cozy Method (because we love a good acronym):
C - Choose spaces that align with your energy
O - Observe before diving in
Z- Zero pressure to perform
Y - Your pace, your way
Let's open some Real Talk: Digital Boundaries for Real Peace, be honest about something: If you are anything like me, Sometimes social media feels like being at a party where everyone's talking at once.I am not sure if I want to leave or engage and if I do when will i stop?
Here's how to make it work for your neurodivergent brain:
1. Create yourself a Traffic Light System. personally, I have this one-timer; two hours is definitely in the red zone!
🔴 Red: Full stop, need break
🟡 Yellow: Limited engagement
🟢 Green: Full connection mode
While mine is a timer, don't forget to Create your personal indicators for each level!
2. Permission Slips (Yes, Actually Write These Down and create something physical to remind you!)
- Permission to not respond immediately
- Permission to use emoji when words are hard
- Permission to leave groups that don't serve you
- Permission to connect in your own way
The Joy of Digital Connection
Try this: Next time you're online, notice:
- Which interactions make you smile
- Where you feel most understood
- What content brings you peace
- Who makes you feel seen
This is your digital joy map—use it to guide your online time. There is no benefit in the doom scroll!
So, with those boundaries created, let's look into the practical ways to create digital well-being instead of overload!
1. The Connection Timer
As mentioned above, this is a need in my life! Not a limiting timer, but an awareness tool:
- Set gentle reminders to check in with yourself
- Notice when you're feeling connected vs. drained
- Track your best connection times
2. The Digital Comfort Kit
Create a folder of:
- Screenshots of kind messages
- Favourite memes that make you laugh
- Supportive conversations
- Achievements and wins
3. The Reconnection Ritual
When online spaces feel overwhelming:
- Take three deep breaths
- Feel your feet on the ground
- Remember you control your digital space
- Return only when it feels right
Remember: Your Digital Space, Your Rules, Your Choice!
✓ It's okay to:
- Take breaks without announcing them
- Connect differently than others
- Find depth in digital friendships
- Create boundaries that work for you
The Beautiful Truth:
Connection isn't about the medium - it's about finding your people, sharing your heart, and being understood. Whether that happens face-to-face or screen-to-screen, the feeling is real. What rules and boundaries are you giving yourself to empower your relationship with social media instead of letting it control you?
Your Next Gentle Steps:
1. Choose one space that feels truly good
2. Create one boundary that serves you
3. Save one thing that makes you smile
4. Connect in one way that feels authentic
What's one small way you'll make your digital space cosier this week?
Tracy xx
Ps. As with all social media, take care of yourself and keep your details secure, and from the experience of watching people go through it if they are asking for money, they are not after real connections xx
